6 Things Only People Who Have Been On A River Trip Will Understand

A river trip can be a transformative experience. You are able to become fully immersed in nature, bond with a group of travel mates, and challenge yourself physically. If you’ve ever been on a river trip, here are 6 things that will make perfect sense to you.

Rising With the Sun is Enjoyable

There is nothing glamorous about getting up at the crack of dawn with your alarm clock to head to work. Rising with the sun feels incredibly early and tiresome under normal everyday circumstances. However, when you are sleeping under the stars and communing with nature, witnessing the sunrise is both inspiring and exciting. Those who have seen the sun slowly ascending over the mountains and river understand what a truly peaceful experience it is.

It’s Okay to Unplug

The idea of giving up your phone, computer and television can be overwhelming in such a technological age. Being disconnected from your devices and online communities can feel The thought of missing a social media post, text, or favorite show can feel isolating and worrisome. Those who have spent several days in nature surrounded by new friends will agree that you will not think twice about cutting the cord with technology.

The River is Relaxing

Those who have never been on a river trip might think that there is a constant rush of adrenaline, excitement and activity. While there is plenty of that during paddle boarding and whitewater rafting adventures, there are also many moments of peace and tranquility. The crisp air, rushing waters and chirping birds provide a sense of calm that is both relaxing and restorative.

River Guides are Well-Educated and Professional

Those who have not embarked on a river trip likely picture the river guide as a beach bum type: long hair, shirtless, and a little wild and crazy. While river guides are certainly energetic and humorous, they are also incredibly knowledgable and well-versed in the environments and activities that they lead people through. These guides often have a deep and thorough understanding of the science and history of the river and areas that are visited during the trip. They also take care of all of the packing of the raft with the supplies for everyone, which is a science in itself.

Outdoor Toilets Aren’t so Bad

The groover, as the traveling outdoor commode is affectionately called, can sound incredibly off-putting if you are not accustomed with the setup. Using the bathroom outdoors can be intimidating enough, but the idea of bringing the waste along throughout the trip can be an incredibly overwhelming thought for novice river adventure enthusiasts. However, adjusting to using the groover happens quickly, and it becomes second nature before you know it. Plus, you know that you are reducing waste in each of the environments you visit, keeping them clean and healthy for the wildlife and other travelers.

There is Nothing Else Like It

While there are many beautiful locations to visit and fun outdoor adventures to engage in all over the world, there is nothing quite like a river trip. The integration into the wilderness, the heart-pumping excitement of rafting down the river, and the calm and serene nights under the stars. Only those who have been on a river trip can truly understand how unique and magical it is.
